A Visit to Rydal Mount
As if to prove that Wordsworth was human,
the cabinet displays his breakfast condiment.
I wonder what he used it for.
I can’t quite be sure with a man
like Wordsworth, who stored his cigars in a tea box
although he didn’t even smoke.
For all we know, Wordsworth may have served
his condiments in the collection of thimbles that now hang
on the wall of his drawing room.
He was a man of possibility,
this Wordsworth,
wild as a curious child.
In the library, his favourite chair
allowed him to draw his word swords
either left or right handed.
